No sound from headphones or speakers on iPhone 4 Fix

I think this problem is nearly as bad as bricking your device as iPod, video playback/record, Phone, alarms, or sound related apps stop working. Searching on the Internet, very little effective solutions. During my search I often came across issues concerning either the speakers or the headphones but rarely both! This is why I decided to write this post and provide solutions that work.

Having my iPhone 4 in this state really got me freaking out as my warranty was due to expire in 2 months and all the other people I've come across through the apple discussion groups and different forums on the Internet had to have theirs replaced for a new one as their phone was still under warranty.

Just to give you an idea on the state of my device :
- No sound during calls from headset
- Mic not recording sounds
- No Sound output through headphones
- No sound output through speakerphones
- No Sound through bluetooth handsfree
- When I play a song on the iPod app it just immediately stops

As I live overseas and the closest Apple stores are 1000 km from me, returning the my phone was not an option, so I was bound to find a solution on my own.

I've tried all those so called solutions on the Internet but with no success:
- Plugging in and out rapidly and several times headphone on the iPhone... Nothing
- Tried by reassuring phone settings to factory default... Nothing
- Restored the phone with an upgrade ( from 4.2.1 to 4.3.5) and all that DFU voodoo... Still nothing.

Doubi's Sound fix
From there I decide to "rejailbreak" my iPhone 4 as iOS 4.3.5 is "unjailbreakable" at the time I'm publishing this post, so I restored my shsh blob with Tiny Umbrella by launching the app and starting the TSS and while the iPhone is in DFU mode (to put your phone in DFU mode Hold Power + Home for 10 secs and the release the power button while still holding Home for 8 secs) and restore the old firmware (4.2.1 in my case). After a few minutes, an error message will pop up (don't worry this is normal) and then... What do you know, you can hear the lock screen beep and don't ask me how but THE SOUND IS BACK !!!

I was so happy to have my iPhone working again that I gave up on jailbreaking it but if one of you is able to after this, please let me know.

I'll give you this other tip as a bonus, when you iPhone is stuck in headphone mode (you can check by pressing the volume button and see if it displays "headphone volume" and if sound is only working with headphones) : Just suck the headphone jack as hard as you can and this will solve the problem.

Hope you found this article helpful and I'm really looking forward to your comments.

  4. I am having the exact same problem!! No sound at all... unreal. I currently have iOS 4.2.1 and have had it jailbroken forever with absolutely no problems. Randomly today this happened... I really need help because I can't exactly understand what to do from your instructions. I downloaded Tiny Umbrella and made sure my SHSHs were loaded on there. I am in the process of downloading the software update to restore (4.3.5). Please get back to me ASAP if you can. I need a little help!

  5. Jeremy,

If you don't mind the tethered Jailbreak then upgrade to 4.3.5 and then try the downgrade with tiny umbrella (you'll find plenty of tutorials for downgrading on google).

    1. Put you phone in DFU mode

    2. Launch the TSS server (you have a start TSS server button in tiny umbrella) and let it run in the background.

    3. Start iTunes it will say "you have a phone in restore mode" (or something like that)

    4. Hit the restore button while holding the alt (option) button

    5. Select the ipsw file you wish to downgrade to and at the end of the process all should be fine.

    6. You will get an error message at the end of the process but that's normal

    Let know if it worked.

  6. Karl,

I tried doing those exact steps for hours and and could never get it to successfully work. I ended up taking it to the Apple store yesterday and got a new phone for free. I only had 2 days left on my warranty so I was lucky enough to snag a new one before my warranty ran out. Now my question is this - Is there any untethered jailbreak out for 4.3.5? I only had 4.2.1 installed and then updated to 4.3.5. Would there be anyway to downgrade back to 4.2.1 on this new phone I got?

  7. Unfortunately you SHSH back up will only work on the phone it was backed up with. As far as I know, you will have to go for the tethered 4.3.5 jailbreak until then.

  9. While playing a song on itunes, I gently squeezed the phone just to the right of the home button and the sound came back to the speakers; this means it's a hardware problem, ie loose connection.

  10. hi i have the same problem. i dropped my phone 2 weeks ago and heres all the problem..

-no click sound every time i turn the phone on/off and slide..

-mute bottom works perfectly and it does vibrate... but every time i click the volume up and down, theres no volume control under the ringer icon.

-no clicking sound every time i dial a number or sending a text msg.. (i turned on all the sounds on the phone settings)

-when on youtube.. the video will play but you can't see any volume control under the rewind, play/pause, and forward button. (there should be under those buttons.

but every time i plug in my earphones it seems so perfect.. all the clicking sounds and notifications works well.

i ordered the parts on ebay and hope this will fix the problem..

  11. headphones should be durable, because most of the time i buy headphones then their either of the ear stops working or they start producing noise which is very irritating. iphone headphones are those which should tackle these problems for long time.

  12. Anybody got any update my phones only new and havein d exact same problem (no volume slider except with headfones). Havent dropped fone so cant see it being a hardware problem?? :/

  13. My iPhone 4S had "no volume control". It rang and alerted fine thru the speakers. But no sound during music playback via loudspeaker or games. I noticed that this first happened after I remove the digital AV connector to my TV. But the hold home button + power for 10 secs did the trick. Now the sound is back! Thanks dude.

  15. I thought I’d share my story with everyone.
Last night I dropped my phone and I noticed that there was no sound. I tried turning the sound from vibrate to sound so many times and it just didn’t work. The sound from the buttons wouldn’t work, the ringtone wouldn’t work, and it would not play any songs. Luckily I could still hear telephone calls. I was FREAKING out. I started looking for help online. I restored my phone, cleared everything off, and put everything back on. Still didn’t work. I didn’t want to believe my sound was broken from a drop. So, this morning I started researching again. I cleaned out the mic at the top and nothing. But, then I looked at your page and IT WORKED! Who would of known holding down the home and power button for 10 seconds then the home for 8 would allow the sound to come back on my phone. I even restarted it just to make sure. AWESOME! You saved me from a headache of a really expensive bill of buying a replacement (how many hundred dollars?). Thank you sooo sooo much.

  16. Hey man I have an iPhone 4 but it is not jailbroken so this fix should work for me? I was trying to hold both power and home by 10 seconds but the phone gets turned off and turned on while I was presing the 10 seconds so I don't know if it is working when I release the power button and holding the home button because when I'm holding on the home button for 8 seconds the phone is starting. Thank you very much for your help!

  20. Not one mention of Audio Technica.... the Best Headphones 'value for your money' headphones on the market. I own the ATH-M50's and they are by far superior to that pair of Bose in terms of sound clarity... can't comment to the comparison against the others because I've never tried them. Audio Technica definitely deserves a place on this list.

  21. This is a pretty common issue. Your phone is probably not damaged. Usually it’s caused by the headphone jack sensor being stuck perhaps due to some dirt or dust on the sensor. Here is how you can fix it. Just play some music or something and insert the Best Headphones in and out several times. This solves it almost every time.

  22. Thanks for the post! I love music and i'm always listening to music on my ipod or iphone, so when looking for the best earbuds I definitely wasn't settling for less than the best.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I had the issue and had tried using a headphone, plugging it in and out with no result. I snipped the cotton end off a q-tip and used the stick part to clean out the headphone plug. It came out dirty and the phone started working.

  24. ok. I'm on the phone with my boyfriend for hours. and my phone gets really hot. so lastnight i put my phone in a plastic baggie and put it in the freezer for 3 minutes. and it worked for about 3 seconds. my phone isn't stuck in headphone mode or whatever. the sound works perfectly fine through the headphones. but when I unplug them, no sound at all. it'll vibrate. but no sound. it's an iPhone 4s and I've only had it for a few months. thanks :)

  30. Sophia let me see if I can help ... Your phone must still be in DFU mode so to knock it out hold on the home and power button for about 12-15 seconds and then release both and just hold the power button for about 3 seconds and you should see the apple logo again. Make sure your phone is fully charged when you do this and try the. Jacksucker again. Let me know how it goes...

  31. Thanks for the support Billy. I followed your tip and put a header Sound fix and Jacksucker .

  34. Was stressed for couple of hours as there was no sound in the receiver. Waking up in the morning I have noticed that my iPhone 4 is working fine again. I suspect it got some snow/water/moisture and overnight dried out.

    Good luck to others.

  42. I had the same problem. I tried everything mentioned here. The only thing that worked was when i cut the end off a q-tip and placed the stick into the jack hole. Cleaning it didn't work but when i put pressure against the q-tip stick the sound came back on. When i took the stick out, the sound cut out again. This would suggest a loose connection to me but my upgrade isn't for a ages yet so f**k paying to get it serviced!!

In the end i just put the q-tip stick in the jack, and cut it off flush with the top of the phone. Yes, there a bit of plastic stick in the headphone jack meaning i cant use my iphone with headphones, but thats what my ipod is for!

Last resort tip for anyone pulling their hair out!!
